Shore-casting has always been a popular way to fish in Hawaii and the fisherman here have developed a unique way of going after these predators called slide baiting. Using big Ulua poles and large conventional reels can get you a fun experience every fisherman should experience. Slide baiting is used from high cliffs and sandy beaches with nice waves. Slide bait is exactly what it sounds like sliding bait down the line alive or in chunks.

Gear
- Baitcasting Rods (11-14ft fast action rods made local in Hawaii)
- Reels (smaller conventional penn or newell reels in the 3/0 - 6/0
- size range but i recommend the Penn senator 4/0)
- 30-100lb Lin
- Pigtail swivel
- 1/0 barrel swivel with stopper ring
- 60-70lb leader line
- 20-24 Tankichi hooks
- Spikes and tag line (for safety precautions) Large rock needed to secure your pole on high cliffs
- 4-8oz weights (with or without grabber wires. you need the wires in strong currents)
- Headlamp, extra headlamps, camping gear for staying overnight, and food and water.
- Bait (tako legs, roi chunks, etc.) Anything you catch for live bait
How to set up your rig:
Tie the main line to the 1/0 barrel swivel with stopper ring. Next, tie leader line to
the weights with grabber wires. Make 3-5 slide rigs which are made by attaching
leader line to the pigtail swivel. Then, wrap the line around the size 20 Tankichi hook
and crimp it together ( I prefer making these before hand to save time). Then, before you
cast your pole, find a secure spot between cracks in lava rocks to plant the spike. Cast
your pole on a open spot between two reefs or just by a reef but don't cast on top
of the reef. Reel in the line till the wires dig in and pull slack and put the pole in the
spike. Now, put your tag line in the slot on the pole and securely tie it to a heavy rock.
Lastly, put the slide rig with bait on top on the line and lift the pole till it slides all the
way down.
